Internship Experience

Internship Oversight by Puentes

We want to make sure that your internship is as engaging and successful as possible. You will have a dedicated Puentes Mentor from our team, who will oversee your internship experience.

Internship Oversight Meetings

The following are meetings that your Puentes Mentor will coordinate to provide oversight and support for your internship experience:

Meet and Greet

You will have a one-on-one virtual meeting with your Puentes Mentor before the program starts, to discuss your goals for the internship and to get to know each other.

Initial Internship Meeting

In the first week of your internship, you will have a meeting to review the Internship Work Agreement and reconfirm internship expectations and project goals with your internship supervisor and Puentes Mentor.

internship pulse check

After your first week of the internship, you will have a one-on-one meeting with your Puentes Mentor to check in on your project work structure, communication with your supervisor, and other first-week dynamics.

Mid-Internship Meeting

Halfway through the internship, you, your Puentes Mentor, and your internship supervisor will have a mid-internship meeting to provide a space to communicate learnings, challenges, and successes from the first part of the internship and to look ahead to objectives for the second half of the internship.

Closing Meeting

At the end of the internship, you will have a closing evaluation meeting with your Puentes Mentor and your internship supervisor to review your project deliverables and to reflect on the experience and learnings.

Internship Expectations

Responsibilities of the intern:

  • Approach my internship work with a willingness to learn and to tackle new experiences with an open mind and an optimistic enthusiasm.

  • Perform assigned projects and tasks to the best of my ability and according to my supervisor’s indications and expectations.

  • Be dependable, work effectively, meet deadlines, and have a positive attitude.

  • Use my laptop computer to be able to carry out internship work.

  • Alert my supervisor and Puentes Mentor of any factor that would interfere with fulfilling my internship commitments.

  • Provide a doctor’s note to my supervisor if I need any sick days.

Responsibilities of the internship supervisor:

  • Assign meaningful work with specific directions and expectations for the intern.

  • Schedule a regular check-in meeting (at least once a week) to offer feedback and review project progress, questions, and upcoming tasks.

  • Participate in an initial meeting, mid-internship and closing oversight meeting with the intern and designated Puentes Mentor during the internship.

  • Communicate any questions or concerns about the internship to the Puentes Mentor.

  • Complete a brief survey at the end of the program.

Workplace Differences

Workplace formality in Argentina and Uruguay is generally more relaxed than in the United States; while professionalism is still very important, there is less focus on titles, dress codes, and hierarchy. Colleagues often go by first names, and the line between personal and professional relationships is more fluid, with office conversations touching on a wide range of topics.

Time and scheduling are also more flexible. Meetings may start late, and deadlines are sometimes treated more as guidelines than strict rules. However, you should always be on time to meetings and clarify deadlines carefully with your supervisor.

Argentines and Uruguayans love to share, whether it be passing the mate around or ordering group plates at restaurants. The common greeting, no matter what gender you are or relationship you have, is a kiss on the cheek. Coworkers will expect you to greet each of them upon arrival to the office and to say goodbye before you depart, so respect this cultural norm of greetings to ensure that you make your coworkers feel respected and appreciated.

Coworking Space Access

During the program, you have access to a co-working space to use at a local co-working office. You can take advantage of this co-working space to use during any virtual workdays that you have, offering you a comfortable professional setting to work alongside other Puentes interns and local professionals. Check your weekly emails from Puentes for information on how to use the co-working space.
