On Finding a Third Home

As I sit down to reflect on my time during the Penn Abroad internship in Uruguay, I am filled with a sense of nostalgia and gratitude for the experiences I had and the lessons I learned. The journey has been transformative, and I wanted to share with you how this adventure has left an indelible mark on my perspective.
Upon returning to the United States, I've found myself yearning for the cultural nuances that once seemed different. Something as simple as saying "buenos días" to strangers and feeling their genuine warmth in return that a small city can provide has become a cherished memory. The close-knit community that enveloped me in Uruguay is something I dearly miss. There was a sense of togetherness, a feeling that if you just said you like soccer or mate you could make a new friend that day. Even the customary kiss on the cheek to greet someone became a symbol of the intimacy and friendliness that defined the relationships I built.
My time at MiFinanzas, the finance business where I interned, revealed the multifaceted nature of such organizations. Contrary to popular belief, I witnessed firsthand how a fintech can be not only profit-driven but also deeply caring about their employees' well-being and committed to making a positive impact on society. I saw how MiFinanzas prioritizes the work-life balance of their workers and incentivizes them to study further and develop skills aside from work. Since my first day there, I felt welcome in the company that would become my new home. The company's dedication to social responsibility left an indelible impression on me. It showed me that even in the seemingly cold world of finance, there is room for empathy and social change.
This journey wasn't just about professional growth; it was a personal challenge that I embraced with open arms. Stepping out of my comfort zone, I embraced the opportunity to live independently, build friendships, and navigate a new culture. The experience pushed me to be more social, to forge connections with people from diverse backgrounds, and to open my heart to a place that now feels like a third home. I even joined a dancing group where I met some incredible friends that I hope to see again soon.
I recall the countless moments of laughter, late-night conversations, amazing and shared meals that bound me to my newfound friends. Through them, I discovered the beauty of Uruguay beyond its landscapes - the kindness of its people, the vibrancy of its traditions, and the genuine care they showed for one another.
My time during the Penn Abroad internship in Uruguay was a tapestry of culture, personal growth, and professional insight. I'm forever grateful for the memories, the lessons, and the friendships I made. The experience has broadened my perspective, enriched my understanding of finance and culture, and allowed me to overcome personal barriers. As I move forward, I carry with me the spirit of Uruguay, the warmth of its people, and the lessons that will continue to shape my journey.
